Our HAND at DGSOM chapter builds upon the foundation of the UCLA undergraduate chapter, with a mission to enhance awareness, education, and innovation in the field of neurological diseases through the following:
- Serve as a bridge between undergraduate and medical students, offering mentorship that includes guidance on medical school pathways and career opportunities within neurology and related fields.
- Host educational panels featuring medical students, residents, fellows, and industry leaders to share insights into their research, specialties, and career journeys.
- Advocate for patients with neurological conditions through community outreach and educational events, partnering with UCLA Movement Disorders Clinic and Parkinson's Community Los Angeles.

Tiffany Chen is a second-year medical student at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where she is committed to advancing both the scientific and social dimensions of healthcare through leadership, advocacy, and research. She graduated from UCLA in 2023 with a bachelor's degree in Human Biology & Society, where she was involved in clinical research on long-haul COVID and integrative medicine. In 2020, Tiffany founded HAND (High-tech and Neurological Disorders), an organization dedicated to mentoring and providing hands-on learning opportunities for students interested in neurological disorders and innovative medical technology. Now as a medical student, Tiffany is excited to expand HAND to DGSOM, fostering a community that encourages collaboration and innovation in neuro-related biotechnology. In her free time, Tiffany enjoys practicing her medical Mandarin at Chinatown health fairs, refining her golf swing, and unwinding on nature walks in the botanical gardens.
CloseHayoung Ahn is a medical student at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Originally from New York City, she graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience and a minor in Psychology. Afterwards, she worked as a psychology lab manager and research assistant at the University of Chicago, studying cognitive processes such as memory and decision-making. Simultaneously, she took on several volunteer leadership roles for organizations that promote mental health advocacy and Asian American health. Now as a medical student, Hayoung has continued to explore her interests in brain sciences at a more clinical level. She hopes to blend her interests in media and creative arts with medicine and education in the future. Outside of school/work, Hayoung enjoys hiking and relaxing in nature, going to concerts, and creating social media content!
CloseCrystal Zhou is a first-year medical student at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She grew up in Toronto, Canada, and Shanghai, China, developing a multicultural perspective that deeply influences her approach to medicine and health. Her journey led her to California for her undergraduate education, where she discovered her passion for neuroscience and first became actively involved with HAND. During her undergraduate years, Crystal served as a teaching assistant for several courses, including neuroanatomy, and worked as a research assistant at the Zipursky Laboratory, where she studied mechanisms underlying neural wiring. Now, as a medical student, Crystal remains open-minded in her exploration of various medical specialties, aiming to harmonize her intellectual curiosities with her aspiration to create a meaningful impact in global health. Outside of her academic and clinical pursuits, Crystal enjoys skiing, playing tennis, and exploring new cuisines.
