Our Mission

High-tech and Neurological Disorders (HAND) at UCLA works to increase awareness and education of neurological diseases, including movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. We are composed of three committees: Education, Outreach, and Public Relations. An innovation aspect includes our undergraduate prototype team to aid in the building of a patent device to help patients with Parkinson’s disease. We collaborate with medical and industry professionals to learn more about treatment options and research opportunities related to neurological diseases.

What We Do

High-tech and Neurological Disorders (HAND) at UCLA works to increase awareness and education of neurological diseases, including movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.

alternative

Awareness

We promote awareness and understanding of neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, by providing opportunities for members to create educational newsletters and infographics. Additionally, we plan to create an outreach curriculum to teach STEM workshops to highschool students, with topics such as the applications of technology in healthcare, and career development pathways.

alternative

Learning

We build a community of undergraduate and graduate students interested in neuroscience and biotechnology, and connect them with networks of professionals in their respective fields through events such as guest speakers and journal clubs.

alternative

Collaboration

We create an innovation team combining students in business, design, and the sciences to build intelligent iStopShaking IOT prototypes based on patent #10,694,989 awarded June of 2020.

Shadowing

This school year, members will learn of various neurological disorders, including diagnosis, treatment options, and long-term patient care. This will aid members in preparing for potential clinic volunteering and physician shadowing opportunities next year.

alternative

Entrepreneurship

As part of our professional development curriculum, members will learn and explore career opportunities, ranging from the different medical specialities and pathways, to the biotechnology industry and startup creation.

Our Committees

Interested in joining our committees? Learn more about what they do.

Education

Education seeks to raise awareness and increase education around neurological disorders and treatments. For HAND'S social media platforms, members create infographics to advance understanding on various neurological topics. The podcasts team produces segments related to neuroscience research and interview leaders in the field. Lastly, members create seminars for each general meeting to teach fellow students about diseases and current research on treatments for those diseases.

Outreach

This school year, members of the Outreach committee worked on applying what they have learned about neurological diseases and treatment options to develop a neuroscience curriculum to teach to middle schoolers, educate young future neuroscientists by presenting at Brain Awareness Week, and aiding other HAND members in finding opportunities and internships.

Public Relations

Public Relations committee aims to to start meaningful dialogue about neurological disorders and treatments through social media campaigns. They designs flyers and graphics to spread awareness of neurological disorders on social media, as well as advertising events and fundraisers.Members are in charge of brainstorming fundraiser ideas that can be implemented throughout the year and designing promotional materials for social media.
